Popular African youth TV program which gave stars like Lupita Nyong’o and Tiwa Savage their big breaks into “celebville”, the award winning television hit series SHUGA is going to air season 5 dubbed ‘MTV Shuga: Down South’ exclusively on NBS TV. This, in partnership with Reach a Hand Uganda (RAHU) – a youth led non-profit organization focused on youth empowerment programs with an emphasis on SRHR (Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights), HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.
With South African clubs, bars and student hangouts providing a canvas, MTV Shuga: Down South tells the tale of sex, friendship and despair. Originally released in 2009 on MTV Base under its MTV Staying Alive Foundation, Shuga was part of a multimedia campaign to spread the message about responsible sexual behavior and tolerance, and aired in 40 different African countries. Today’s version is a multimedia campaign, which educates youths on HIV, safe sex and teen pregnancy. It also touches on maternal and child health, family planning, gender-based violence and women empowerment.
In 2015, RAHU held the first ever-premiere event for Shuga targeting their core audience of youth whose interests revolve around their peers, passions such as music, sports and entertainment. With Shuga main star, Emmanuel Ikubese set to jet into the country this week alongside Nigerian International female artiste and musician, Chidinma, the MTV Shuga: Down South premiere event is slated to take place this Thursday 11th May at Sky Lounge and the first episode will be shown live on NBS TV from Tuesday, 16th May 2016.
MTV Shuga: Down South will air every Tuesday at 8pm on NBS TV.
