Makerere University Business School (MUBS) has taken tough disciplinary action against students found guilty of examination malpractice and irregularities during Semester Two of the 2024/2025 academic year.
In a communication from the Office of the School Registrar dated August 18, 2025, the Academic Board announced resolutions from its 89th meeting held on August 4. The Board confirmed that 75 students were implicated in various forms of malpractice, ranging from possession of unauthorized materials to forgery of permits and disrupting exams.
According to the report, the majority of cases—66 students—involved possession of unauthorized materials such as mobile phones, smart watches, spy eye glasses, summarized notes, and unauthorized slips. Of these, four students were cautioned, while 63 had their examinations cancelled, with three suspended indefinitely.
Other categories of malpractice included:
- Unauthorized material and disruption – 1 student cautioned.
- Unauthorized material and destroying exam scripts – 1 student suspended for a semester, exams cancelled.
- Disruption of the exam and writing false information – 1 student suspended for a year, exams cancelled.
- Collusion and destruction of evidence – 3 students suspended for one to two years, exams cancelled.
- Copying and aiding in copying – 3 students suspended indefinitely, exams cancelled.
- Forgery of examination permits – 1 student suspended for two semesters, exams cancelled.
- Communicating during exams – 2 students cautioned.
The School emphasized that the penalties are intended to protect the integrity of MUBS’s academic standards and serve as a warning to other students.
“The purpose is to strictly remind students to adhere to the University’s examination rules. Any student contravening them will face disciplinary action,” the Registrar’s statement reads.
This latest crackdown highlights the institution’s commitment to curbing academic dishonesty and preserving the credibility of its qualifications.
