Over 113 Luzira Inmates graduated on Thursday July 26th with Diplomas and certificates in entrepreneurial courses where 55 inmates earned Diplomas and 58 scooped certificates. The fresh graduates have been students of Makerere University Business School (MUBS).
While speaking at the 6th Luzira Prison graduation ceremony, Mr Andrew Nsambu, one of the graduates revealed that he will no longer be a problem to society when he is set free. “I am confident that I will be a great person when I will be released from this prison. The skills I have acquired have changed my mindset. I will no longer be a problem to society, I will no longer be a liability but an asset once I am set free.” Nsambu said.
Nsambu also talked about the challenges faced while pursuing their studies among which include lack of internet services to enable learners make research, insufficient reference materials for the leaners as well as inadequate funding basing on the fact that inmates have no income sources.
The graduated inmates were from the academic years of 2015/2016 as well as 2016/2017. According to Gilbert Niwamanya the Luzira Upper Prison head teacher, a total of 407 inmate students have been registered for both certificate and diploma entrepreneurial courses since the program was introduced of which 82 percent have graduated.
While speaking at the graduation ceremony, the Deputy Commissioner General of Prisons Mr James Mwanjje revealed that the inmates’ population is currently at 54,640 of which 5894 are pursuing formal education at primary, secondary and tertiary level.
