The president of the students’ Guild of Makerere University Business School (MUBS) together with his Guild cabinet ministers launched a campaign dubbed ‘Tuve ku kaveera’ in the Clean and Green health week in a bid to conserve the environment.
The Clean and Green health week took place at MUBS last week and saw several students joining in to keep the Campus dirt free by picking litter and planting trees and flowers so as to conserve the environment.
This ‘Tuve ku kaveera’ campaign which was explained by the Guild president, H.E. Ntende Julius involves stationing of customized dust bins allover the University so that polythene bags would be picked and disposed off with ease.
Ntende, together with his Vice president H.E. Shamim Kabasiita and other ministers and Guild Representative Councillors (GRCs) also traversed the University picking polythene bags and cleaning the campus while carrying dust bins and a banner carrying the message of a ‘kaveera’ free University.
Besides cleaning the University, the Guild also launched a paper bag manufacturing project. These paper bags would be distributed to the Guild canteens to replace polythene bags that have posed a danger to the environment.
“We have kick-started this project and we expect government to come and support it. We are manufacturing paper bags that will be distributed to the Guild canteens where students can access them,” said Julius Ntende.
The LC5 Councillor of Nakawa division, Mugisha Moses Okwang commended the students for this initiative and encouraged the rest of the country to adopt the same for a polythene bag free nation.
