Following a successful nomination of Candidates at the Nakawa based Makerere University Business School, Guild candidates on Thursday launched the open campaigns, officially at Berlin Hall, a popular spot for open campaigning over the years.
The event was well attended by members and officials from the MUBS Electoral Commission, Candidate’s and their respective agents and it all started with a word from the commission before the five contestants in the race (UYD’s Awori Emmanuel, FDC’s Walter Niwagaba Kakuru, NRM’s Korituha Racheal, and Independent candidate’s Mugoya Akibu plus the counter part Katamba Israel) presented their manifestos to already jubilant students.
Uganda Young Democrats’ Awori Emmanuel headlined the manifesto’s presentation by thanking the students for flocking the campaign’s. He promised the students at Berlin a free wi-fi which has always been a challenge.
“I would like us to concentrate on the manifesto. A manifesto we consulted you for. We consulted you to ensure that that we come up with this together as students of MUBS. Whether you are on certificate, Diploma or Bachelors. Whether you are from Berlin or hostel. This manifesto has been made focusing on seven things, education, water, partnership’s, religion’s, engagement, food, security. I want us to focus on our dear ladies, food in the dining hall, sanitation. The works are under staffed, inconsistent WiFi…” – Awori partly promised in his speech.
He added that the school dean must taste the food that students feed on and make necessary alterations. Concluded with saying a woman was created under the arm of the man so that he should take care of her, not from the head to be ruled or from the feet to be stepped on. He then promised wall mirrors on every block of the mighty Berlin hostel for the ladies to check on their beauty each morning, sending many Berlin residents into frenzy.
Next in line was independent candidate Mugoya Ali who just like Awori promised free Wi-fi for all Berlin students. He says many might despise him because of his size as compared to the four candidates but reminded them of the popular saying that an army of sheep led by a lion will defeat that of lion led by sheep in the battle field. Mugoya is a lion.
“I come before you with tears. Every time I look at MUBS, I feel bad. The ladies in Berlin need a television set atleast in the common room and WiFi. I am bringing the WiFi and the password will be Mugoya Akibu. Mugoya is ready to bring in a change.” – He said in part of the statement.
NRM’s Korituha Rachael, the only lady in the race who also doubles as a resident at the Berlin hostel, a major point of discussion when it comes to MUBS guild presidential campaigns assured students that only a lady will understand what ladies go through.
She started her presentation with a story of a man who went to attend a meeting in casual wear, he was bounced and when he came back in an official suit, the same man was welcomed with pleasure, and received a dinner. He used the suits to clean his hands saying that is why it was required, to work at the party.
What sent students into jubilation and the opposition into boos and disses was when she mentioned how she had held talks with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to have Berlin hostel renovated from the roof to the floor and that could only be possible when she is voted into power. She pointed on the WiFi issues just like every other candidates.
Her major points were basically directed to Berlin residents and could actually be misinterpreted to a Berlin hostel representative rather than Guild president.
Independent candidate Katamba Israel talked about unity. Saying students must drop all the colours and stand as one. Under his hashtag #Easy he says that everyone who spoke before him was noting out problems that really affect the common MUBS students but these are the same problems that have always been pointed out by the previous regimes and nothing has been done.
He says he didn’t come in the race just for political lies but to make a substantial change if trusted with power. Easy!
The last presentation came from the FDC flag bearer, MUBS chapter Niwagaba Walter Kakuru who was welcomed by the sound of bands, vuvuzelas and his own tune ‘Walter zooye’ which was recorded by his campaigning team.
Unlike all the speakers, Walter promised to have a rather smaller WiFi placed in Berlin’s common room immediately after his presentation and we can confirm, that it is already functioning and the ladies at Berlin are connected. He promised an even better WiFi connection once voted into office. He also expressed how he is the only contestant that has really been on ground to taste the food and living of a common student.
I'” Ladies and gentlemen when you look at an orange and a lemon, you can never know which one is sweet and which is sour until you taste them. That is why am here and that is why they are there so you can taste and judge who the next guild should be. Am asking for a responsibility not a position. MUBS has so many politicians but a few leader’s. Walter is a leader.” – He said in part.
Contestants later received blessings from the council of elders and a word from the out going guild led by Matovu Jorum.
The ground is levelled, the finishing line is set as MUBS sets out to look for who should drive it forward. The bee is buzzing and we shall keep you updated with all the buzz and ongoings from the #MUBSDecides2017. Don’t touch your dial.
