Information Campusbee has received indicates that on Monday, a lecturer, a one Irene, taught only one student who had turned up for the lecture out of the supposed 280 students in the BBA class. The lecturer went on dictate notes to the only student and gave her a handout at the end of the class.
On Tuesday, 20 students turned up and the lecturer still went ahead to teach, this time tasking them to register, a move most students say will cause the absentees “a lot of trouble”.
However, many students say it is a norm for them to report a week or two after the supposed reporting date. “I cannot get back to campus on Saturday and you expect me to attend lectures the next week, that’s nonsense. I have to give myself one week to set and organise myself for lectures,” Phillip Isabirye, a second year MUBS student reasons.
As for Jackie Ahimbisibwe,a third year human resource student, she has not yet gotten the money to clear her hostel so is not at campus. “I have to clear up all my hostel fees, which I haven’t, I have to pay up tuition, which I also haven’t, so you cannot start lecturing on the first day of campus as if you do not have a home and family to stay with while the students get ready for class,” she said.
A lecture who spoke off record because she is not allowed to speak on behalf of the university said that the reason students are given holidays is to prepare for the next semester. “Why then would you return to campus when you are not ready to attend lectures? We shall go ahead to teach those that know why they are here,” she added.
The students who have already reported are seen hanging in their hostel balconies blaring music. When asked why they are not attending lectures, they said; “We are not yet ready. We’re still chilling.”
