Makerere University Business School (MUBS) have petitioned the speaker of parliament Rt. Hon Rebecca Kadaga seeking her intervention into the continued closure of Makerere University.
Citing the need to avoid stranding of over 5000 MUBS students awaiting graduation, the institution’s academic staff chairperson Prof Arthur Ahimbisibwe said the University’s closure only holds doom for its affiliates.
Prof. Ahimbisibwe further wants parliament to support MUBS to become independent from Makerere University saying that the institution meets all needed qualifications to stand alone.
The Speaker has referred the matter to parliamentary committee on education and sports for handling.
MUBS is one of the institutions affiliated to Makerere University and cannot carry out an independent degree awarding ceremony as it is subject to University Council and Chancellor of Makerere University.
It is important to note that the secession of MUBS is an important factor in Janet Museveni’s comprehensive plan for Higher Education in Uganda.
While giving the opening remarks at the 23rd annual education and sports sector review workshop at Golf course Hotel in Kampala on August 31, 2016 unveiled details of Government’s priorities and targets for the education sector in the next five years and it includes the establishment of MUBS as an independent degree awarding institution.
The Minister in her speech then hexplained that the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act is undergoing amendment to allow the establishment of MUBS as a private degree awarding institution.
