Residents of the famous Ideal Hostels, located in Nakawa, are facing rough decision-making situations ever since the hostel pinned notices communicating the increment in the fees to be paid with effect from next semester which is to run from August to December 2019. The hostels house hundreds of students of Makerere University Business School(MUBS), Kampala, Uganda.
A number of them are freaking out due to the hiked service fees with most of them saying it’s unfair since the hostel had raised fees the previous semester. The students are confused and wondering what triggered the increment. Most notably, the price of having a fridge in your room at Ideal has increased from shs 100,000 to 200,000 per semester.
One of such students is a girl going by the name @Ugawoman01 on Twitter who took to the social media site to rant particularly about the shs 200,000 levies put on students with fridges in the hostels. She was however advised to consider leaving within her means if she cannot afford the fees by fellow app users.
“Students must acknowledge their family backgrounds by living within their means. Why do you need a fridge in your room? Is it a school requirement? If it is cold water that you need, buy a small water dispenser or a Pot”, @MathiasSsemanda replied to her.
The fees have been changed as shown below:
Double rooms
- 800,000/= to 900,000/=
- 850,000/= to 950,000/ =
- 900,000/= to 1,000,000/=
Single rooms
- 1,200,000/= to 1,350,000/=
- 1,400,000/= to 1,550,000/=
- 1,500,000/= to 1,650,000/=
- 1,600,000/= to 1,750,000/=
Fridges
- 100,000/= to 200,000/=
Booking fees
- Singles – 500,000/=
- Doubles – 400,000/
Other hostels that have increased service fees include Akamweesi, Lords, and Valley Courts Hostels. Usually when such increments are made, there is little to no hope that the decision can be reversed. We can only hope that the residents of the above mentioned hostels will find ways to cope with the new arrangements.
