They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. This is a saying that Derrick Mubiru, a third year student of Makerere University Business School must have learned by heart. Given that in Uganda, there’s literally no market competition to the relatively expensive burgers; from high-end restaurants like Javas and KFC, this enterprising campuser set out to give a perfect substitute to fellow students. He makes delicious burgers that have changed his life for better. His success story is a force to reckon with — very inspiring!
“I am Mubiru Derrick… I’m a student at MUBS, pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science in Marketing. I had the idea of starting the business earlier, but I got the adrenaline to act while I read ‘Stay Alive All Your Life’ by Norman Vincent Peale,” Mubiru stated, joyously.
The kind of company you keep determines your success, many a time, so it was just in order for the entrepreneurial student to get inspiration from his posse.
“I have a circle of friends who love burgers so much. We have always had burger plot almost every week, and now with a fresh quality of mind I was unwilling to accept defeat,” with a twinkle, he plumed.
“I got start up capital from my mother, after I had submitted my proposal to her. And yes I have moderate returns but with time, the profit margin will be as big as I expected.”
It can never be a business if it doesn’t have challenges here and there, however small. Derrick thus told me about the ones he faces.
“The only challenges I am finding rotate around delivery to customers far from campus, and a few who want offers and credit sales.” This is as expected, very characteristic of university students, who make up the biggest of his target market.
“My main target is of course campus students and the rest of the guys around, for example those having parties and other things of the sort. So I set my price basing on how much I have injected in, and I also put in consideration the nature of my target market,” he added.
Being a university student of Marketing, Mubiru most definitely knows the main objective of a business: to survive in the industry!
“My future plan is to have a burger shop around every campus and transportation like a jaj(boda boda), and above all I want to have a very estimable burger shop in Kampala — in the long run.”
“As for now its mainly beef, veg and double burgers that we make, but we are working on the clock to expand options. We offer free delivery on all sales, and also offer discounts on orders for birthday parties, house parties and the like. I can be contacted on 0703375073; both calls and Whatsapp.” He explained his customer care.
“To the reader, success begins with a fellow’s will and it’s all in the attitude. In the middle of all that live on a faith basis, there are no limits on what God will provide.” Quoth he.
Ultimately, it is inspiring for young countrymen to be venturing in business, so we at The Bee are very proud of you, Derrick. Keep the spirit up!
