Addressing the Class of 2026, Makerere University Chancellor Dr Crispus Kiyonga urged graduates to look beyond traditional employment and explore opportunities within their communities.

“To students, have an eye for what opportunities exist in your country and community in which you can engage for prosperity,” he said.

He acknowledged the realities of a competitive job market, noting that while some graduates will secure formal employment, many will need to create their own opportunities. “Some will have jobs but others won’t because they are few compared to the number of graduates,” he stated.

Dr Kiyonga also highlighted Makerere’s recent research breakthroughs in food security and environmental conservation, including the NutriFish project and efforts to protect 174 species of medicinal plants in Eastern Uganda. He thanked the university community for research initiatives that contribute to national development.

Resilience and New Beginnings

MUBS Principal Prof. Moses Muhwezi congratulated the graduates for their dedication and perseverance.

“Your journey has been marked by dedication, perseverance, and countless hours of hard work,” Prof. Muhwezi said. “This achievement reflects not only academic success, but also the resilience, discipline, and personal growth you have demonstrated along the way.”

He reminded the Class of 2026 that graduation marks the start of a new chapter. “Graduation is not the end. It is the beginning of greater opportunities and responsibilities. Carry with you the knowledge, values, and confidence you have gained, and use them to shape your communities, industries, and our nation for the better,” he urged.

Celebrating Broader Academic Milestones

The ceremony also saw the conferment of a Doctor of Philosophy degree upon Dr Agnes Tabala, a lecturer in the Marketing and Management Department at MUBS Jinja Campus.

In a statement, the MUBS Public Relations Office congratulated all graduates, noting that the milestone reflects years of dedication, resilience and academic excellence.

The school also recognised its 27th Guild President, Moses Amanya, upon his graduation, commending his leadership during his tenure.

Across the university, faculties and colleges joined in celebrating PhD recipients and outstanding performers, underscoring Makerere’s continued commitment to research, innovation and academic distinction.
