While addressing a press conference today morning at Makerere University, the University’s Vice Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe came out to re-affirm his earlier communication regarding graduation of both MUBS and Makerere University students.
According to Prof Nawangwe, this matter is not about MUBS as an Institution but rather about students who owe the University money. “We do not have a standoff with MUBS, but we have said that all students who owe the University any fees, will not graduate and it just happens that some of the students are in MUBS,” Nawangwe clarified.
Nawangwe goes ahead to reveal that the arrangement between the two Universities is that MUBS is supposed to pay for its group of students, “The arrangement between us and MUBS is that MUBS pays for these students as a group, so is not really about MUBS, it is about students who owe the University money.” Nawangwe revealed
However, despite all the said statements, Nawangwe noted that they are having various consultations with MUBS to make sure that this matter is resolved, “We are currently having consultations with the management of MUBS with the aim of finding a solution to this problem as soon as possible so that graduation can proceed,” Nawangwe explains.
If they clear their fees, over 2500 MUBS students are expected to graduate at Makerere University come 16th – 19th Janauary 2018, “The list is about, I think 2500, and we are talking about the portion of functional fees that MUBS is supposed to pay to us” says Nawangwe.
While adreessing allegations by MUBS VC Prof Balunywa that Nawangwe talked to the media without informing him, the Makerere Vice Chancellor revealed that that is not true when he noted that Makerere wrote several times to MUBS regarding this matter, “Regarding the allegations that we just communicated through the press, that is unfortunate if it is true because you prompted to talk about that issue, we had already written to the management of MUBS” Nawangwe concluded.
