Emmanuel Nzeii, a bachelor of business computing student at Makerere University Business School [MUBS] had luck fall on his side as he landed on a graduate training slot in a top NGO in town. He was anticipating handing in his transcript early next year to retain the job. This, however, will not happen as there will be no January graduation following President Museveni’s directive to close Makerere University indefinitely.
Nzeii is just one of the 5,000 enraged and furious MUBS students whose graduation gowns may have to wait a little longer and garner dust as the January graduation at Makerere University hangs in balance. MUBS, which is affiliated to Makerere University, holds a joint graduation ceremony.
Peter Simon Odoki, the Public Relations Officer said that the closure of Makerere University will affect the institution on graduation of degree students.
“Degree students are admitted by Makerere University, which implies that they will not graduate if the institution is still closed by January,” Odoki said.
Students vow to strike
Furious students who have for months looked forward to the glamorous event have vowed to take to the streets to voice their misery.
“We struggled to do the damn papers for three freaking years, and now you mean to tell me we are not graduating? Sevo asaaga we shall get the balls to strike walaayi,” Dalton Musinguzi in a WhatsApp group said.
“I went to register for MAK late things and the damn lady wasn’t working on me, later the University closed and now they tell me I need to pay double the fine all because of their stupidity. You guys, we should’nt let this go on without a fight,” Kenneth Ssembatya instigated.
Everything still hangs in balance as Makerere remains closed for three weeks now. Will the graduation take place? Fingers crossed!
