Makerere University Business School (MUBS) and Stanford University have partnered with United Nations High Commissioner For Refugees (UNHCR) to support refugee businesses in Uganda.
MUBS entrepreneurship, innovation and incubation center trained over 20 refugees in business management and helped them polish their business ideas ahead of the empowerment through pitch training program.
The program that climaxed on October 20th, 2023 was created to support refugees that have ventured into entrepreneurship and secure capital for the outstanding business ideas.
About 14 businesses registered to take up in the program and 3 of these, that emerged as the overall best, received a cash reward of USD 500.
The proprietors pitched their business ideas to a panel of judges who selected the top three. The reward was given to the proprietors of Voice of Refugees, Mat Habestan Daycare and Black Girl Magic.
Other business projects pitched included Heritage bites, Shelter connect, Elleni Medical care, Tad’s designers, Solar System Solutions, Avala pharmaceuticals limited, black members empire and African Marketing.
Speaking during the awarding ceremony, Dr. Diana Ntami Nandagire, director MUBS entrepreneurship center, urged the participants to be flexible depending on the feedback they get from the market and reassured them of MUBS’ commitment to continue supporting them to ensure that they thrive in their respective businesses.
The initiative was aimed at equipping refugees with the necessary skills to pitch their ideas effectively and access funding opportunities. The program aimed at empowering refugees with entrepreneurial aspirations to articulate their innovative ideas and foster self-reliance and economic independence.
