Several Makerere University students have been reaching out to Campus Bee to have their voices heard as the administrations moves to implement online lectures through the university’s Makerere E-learning platform, MUELE.
The students complain that the platform is slow, unreliable and has no reading materials. More reports coming in indicate that many students failed to use the platform hence calling for the administration’s involvement. The students also want a review on how students performed last semester before moving to fully implement it.
According to Joseph Tumusiime, a Makerere University student, both lecturers and students failed to use the platform before resorting to Zoom, Google Meet and other platforms.
“Do they know that MUELLE was very slow every time students were online? Do they know that both lecturers and students failed to use MUELLE because they lacked prior training on how it can be used? Do they know that MUELLE had no reading materials?” Tumusiime wondered.
The bitter Tumusiime added that today, Monday 15th February marked the second week of the semester and yet they have not had a single online lecture.
Tumusiime further called upon fellow students to either stand up and raise their voices or sit and watch their dreams being shattered by the administration.
“Did they carry out a survey to find out how many students could access MUELLE? All what the university is doing is just dictating their policies onto us and that’s how we ended up doing exams last semester without studying.” Tumusiime added.
‘Today marks the beginning of the second week of the semester and yet we have never studied nor heard anything from the university. It’s now upon us the students to stand up and we raise our voices or watch as our dreams are being shattered by the incompetence of the university administration.” Tumusiime further stated.
Makerere and other universities are expected to reopen for physical lectures on 1st March 2021 in a staggered manner. The arrangement will have a section of students study online while others will be allowed to study on campus in a rotational manner.
