The days of thieves who pride in snatching ladies’s hand bags on the trust of the speed of their legs seem to be close to their last days. Equally in trouble are striking students who have made it their business to hurl rocks at policemen and take to their heels. This is after Makerere police benefited from Kale Kayihura’s generosity.

Makerere university police was a lucky beneficiary of part the 6000 pre-electoral motorcycles. The police around September 2015 procured 6,000 motorcycles to carry out patrols during the 2016 general election.
The visibly excited lucky policemen took to the university roads showing off their latest rides. Some were seen patrolling the university streets with the navy blue Yamaha motorcycles in pairs. It’s unclear the number of motorcycles Makerere police post received but it’s projected to be about 10.
The brand new motorcycles still had their polythene wrappers intact. The police men were keen to show off, gingerly riding their “babies.”

Police seems to be moving away from the use of foot patrols and the infamous blue pickups to motorcycles as the main patrolling systems. This latest development is in line with the pledge of The Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura who promised that all the 6000 motorcycles would be fully operational by December last year. “Officers on the motorcycles will be linked to police booths. I want visibility of officers on the ground to deter criminals,” Gen Kayihura is reported to have said.
It’s on record that all motorcycle riders underwent special training under North Korean military instructors falling under the the Field Force Unit, a police paramilitary, on how to handle and operate the motorcycles in the course of their patrols. “We do hope that the crime rate drops drastically!” Opined kamugisha Maurice, a 3rd year Quantity Economics student.
