As Makerere University continues with its legacy of grooming many outstanding individuals, men of substance and creative students strive to exceptionally live by this norm.
Mutebi Santos and Govule Mudashir, fourth year students studying Journalism and Communication refuse to be part of the “unemployed cult.” After the policy of digital migration being a main topic of discussion in June 2015, Santos in his mature analysis had the idea that because of an increase in rates for digital migration, an online television would be the perfect deal for him and colleagues to succeed. Mudashir and Santos considered the fact that they spent each day spending more money buying data compared to making phone calls.
Australian researchers Michael Flood and Clive Hamilton report that it is fair to conclude that anyone who uses the internet extensively has a high possibility of coming across sex sites…”
University students today exploit new media (internet) at their best surfing all kinds of information irrespective of its building aspect. Santos out of his creative thinking looked at his personal production and decided to create something blissful and productive out of it instead of letting youths decay by opting for only pornography on the internet.
An online platform according to Mudashir is easy to sell in this age and era. “The world is going digital,” Govule emphasized.
From coining cartoon graphics for fun, Santos realised that his dream can fully be achieved by putting the online platform to its best uses. On 4th Jan 2016, the two fellows executed and put their ideas to action.
City TV works with close to 20 people and their number keeps on increasing. The participants of City TV are not paid but rather have a mentality that their hearts and efforts will be paid in terms of satisfaction, commitment and experience at the end of the day. The online television has a reach of about 1,000 people on their face book page. The 11 shows that include The box, Glamzone, T.I.M among others tackle various aspects such as entertainment, politics, news and so much more.
Tony Luggya, the media lab technician at Journalism and Communication department says that the concept is good as it shows that students are applying and practicing on personal interests what they are taught in class. He further mentions that in years to come, he envisions it being a platform for most journalism students and even provide it as a link in their various practical coursework.
City T.V’s main objective is to grow as the fastest online T.V ever. However, it has a few challenges such as lacking enough resources. It so far uses one major camera. The venues where to shoot from their respective shows are also lacking. They hope to get sponsors for their shows to meet these challenges. Video shoots are already up for editing and soon to be uploaded on you tube.
City T.V. is an independent entity separate from the Makerere University Journalism and Communication department that possesses an F.M studio and is yet to acquire more studios. For these Journalism students however, digital is the way forward and indeed the thing!
