Politics is on an all time high in Uganda today with 3 of the top most candidates vowing to improve literacy and to pay teachers better, through their manifestos.
At Makerere University, many lecturers have threatened not to give out exams because of non-payment. “Some of us haven’t received salary for the past 4 months and others haven’t received salary for the past 7 months” a lecturer at the faculty of Arts (Choosing to remain anonymous) narrated.
Apparently, lecturers are planning to strike starting on 30th November when the end of semester exams are supposed to begin. Well as students in some Universities are already in their exam period and others getting ready to start exams, many students at Makerere are afraid that they might not start exams on time which might affect their festive season.
To make it worse, students doing some courses like Bachelor Of Development Studies(DVS) only have half of last semester’s results as some of the lecturers refused to mark and pin-up results because of non-pay. “My dad thinks that I missed the 2 exams yet I didn’t” Joan a 2nd year Student of DVS told this reporter.
The situation is tense, students are supposed to be worrying about passing not the fact that they might not even sit their exams. Something has to be done, especially concerning public Universities like Makerere University.
