Yesterday, the prestigious Makerere University had no electricity all day long, lectures were carried out in the dark as many rooms require a lot of light due to their seclusive nature. All the photocopiers in the university were down and this set back studies for the day and also the reading schedule of many students was disrupted.
In one of our dark room lecture rooms, we heard a lecturer tell his students not to worry about the power outage, he further told them that the lovely University Administration had not yet paid her electricity bills to UMEME which was the sole reason for the major blackout that Lasted for a day.
For a moment, we realised how useless the many generators spread accross the university were, or maybe the university administration is suffering the same brokeness that the students are facing today.
The students who stay /reside in the halls were heard cursing the university for not being able to provide steady power supply even after they(the students) completed the tuition on time and under pressure. Darkness reigned yesterday that it was refered to as a dark day in a broke month(black month.)
Many other students were heard hinting on the naked run, saying such a day without power would best suit the occasion. It should be remembered that the naked run is one culture that has been greatly discouraged by many scholars, students and parents.
Power outages in Makerere are not common, but when the relationship between UMEME and Makerere is compromised at such a moment towards exams, students are left in worry and wonder of what might happen.
