Drama arose at Makerere University yesterday, just a few days before their graduation. It is confirmed that over 30 students were excluded from the graduation list. Apparently, the list which was recently released didn’t bear the names of these students yet they met all the requirements. It is for that reason that they stormed the senate building yesterday demanding for answers in regard to that shrewd act. They vowed, amid flying profanities directed at the lady in the senate office, that they wouldn’t live till they gave them a way forward. Some went the extra mile to demand that their names be included on the list while others simply vowed to sit around till their requisitions met answers. This however fell on deaf ears. The lady in the office consequently ignored their pleas like she hadn’t heard them, like she was a deaf and mute lass of sorts. And as if to shun their acts, the rest of the office members were head deep, buried in their work which aggravated the demonstrators infuriation. When they set out to go violent police was called to intervene. According to one of the victims, A lady (whose names we are avoiding to mention because she maybe fired) called them to her office and promised to help only if they gave her a tip.
This ignited their rage and one of them said . “We cleared all the requirements so why should we be charged more money for our names to be included on a list that should legally bear our names, we wont!”. And yes they didn’t, but rather, prepared to stage a more complex demonstration. However the question that hangs in MUK’s atmosphere like a cloud is whether their names were emitted intentionally or is it just the IT systems that are playing games on the administration just like the UNEB machines. According to some of these students, the bliss of graduating isn’t the main reason they’re demonstrating. Most of them informed their relatives to come all the way from the village to attend their graduation party. “Some of us know even if we get the transcript we shall not get jobs. The point is we already called our relatives to come and attend our graduation. Only to find out our names are not on the list. We must graduate, we must graduate!!” the student bellows furiously.
This has prompted the university to ask the students guild to make a list of students who claim they have fulfilled all requirements for graduation but still miss on the list.
