The campaign taskforce of Soroti City East Independent Member of Parliament aspirant Rodney Akongel Mukula has raised alarm over what it describes as a calculated smear campaign aimed at tarnishing the candidate’s reputation as the race gains momentum.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the taskforce said it had received what it termed credible intelligence indicating a plan to distribute sugar allegedly mixed with sand to voters, falsely presenting it as a campaign donation from Mukula.
The taskforce condemned the alleged scheme, describing it as deceptive, unlawful and a direct attack on the principles of free and fair elections.
“This is a deliberate attempt to mislead voters and damage the name of a law-abiding and principled leader,” the statement said, adding that Mukula has consistently run a clean, issue-based campaign anchored in integrity, unity and service to the people of Soroti City East.
The campaign team urged residents to remain vigilant, reject inducements and report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities, warning that such acts undermine democratic processes and voter trust.
Political analysts observing the Soroti City East contest say the alleged smear attempt comes at a time when Mukula’s popularity is visibly rising, placing him among the frontrunners in the race.
According to analysts, negative tactics of this nature often emerge when opponents feel threatened by a candidate’s growing grassroots support, disciplined campaign organisation and broad appeal across different voter groups.
Despite the allegations, Mukula has maintained a calm stance, with his team reiterating his commitment to clean politics and peaceful engagement with voters.
Supporters and observers say the aspirant’s response continues to reinforce his image as a mature and visionary leader, with many viewing him as capable of setting a new standard of representation for Soroti City East.
As the campaign period progresses, attention is expected to remain focused on how candidates conduct themselves and whether authorities will act swiftly to deter practices that threaten the integrity of the electoral process.
