In a letter addressed to the Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, President Museveni directed that the process for the operationalization of Bunyoro University should kick-off. The letter, which surfaced online this week was penned on 24th November 2021.
Museveni directed Janet to plan and budget for the operationalization of Bunyoro University in the 2022/2023 financial year budget. He further tasked the Minister to set up a committee that will advise government on the courses to be offered.
Museveni’s directive comes following a meeting with Bunyoro MPs and academicians led by Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja. During the meeting, the leaders reminded Museveni to operationalize Bunyoro University after countless requests.
“The purpose of this letter, therefore, is to request you to plan and budget for the operationalization of Bunyoro University in the 2022/2023 budget and to set up a committee that will advise Government on the courses to be offered.” The letter reads in part.
According to Bunyoyo leaders, the land for the said university has already been acquired in Hoima District.
Meanwhile, there was a debate to turn Kigumba into a university which President Museveni trashed. According to him, the said training institute was accredited by the National Council for Higher Education to train Ugandans in oil and gas-related skills. Kigumba is already awarding internationally recognized certificates in that field.
