A team from Medicine for Humanity visited Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) Faculty of Medicine to hold a 5-day medical camp to solve urogynecology challenges.
The team of 14 persons traveled to MUST to give hope to women with gynecological challenges such as fistula.
The team was led by Dr. Christopher Tarnay, a Urogynecologist from UCLA and the President of Medicine for humanity, and Dr. Shelley Oconnor the Executive Director of Medicine for Humanity. The Camp was held in Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH).
According to Dr. Musa Kayondo – the head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the camp was to support 50 women who were fully sponsored full board by the Medicine for Humanity.
“Medicine for Humanity has not only sponsored the camp patients but also supported urogynecology fellows who later become mentors to the residents that play a big role in saving lives. This is priceless to us as an institution, we are grateful for the generosity exhibited by the team from Medicine for Humanity,” he appreciated.
He added that the collaboration between Medicine for Humanity and MUST/ MRRH has been in existence for 12 years.
The partnership has had numerous achievements such as building a 50-bed capacity ward for women with urological disorders, capacity building of fellows in Urogynecology, establishing a lecture hall for the Obstetrics and Gynecology classes and annual fistula camps.
