The Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) Fraternity went into a shock on Saturday night after news spread around about the death of Shafik Mulumba a 3rd year Bachelor of Planning and Community Development student.
Shafik who had gone to have fun with friends in Mukono for the Roast and Rave Jambo camp fire met his death when he drowned in the large deep ends of Lake Victoria shores at Nsenyi Islands at around 5:21pm.
Shafik initially never wanted to swim because he had the flu and cough but as the camp got lively, he decided to join his other two friends who were swimming when he got into the water, the body reaction got intense and he started loosing his breath yet he was swimming from a deep end. His lungs couldn’t hold it anymore and he drowned: the other two friends whom he was swimming with were saved by a nearby fisher man as they tried to rescue Shafik.
Shafik was buried yesterday at his ancestral home in Nshwerenkye, Rushere in Kiruhura District @5pm.
Shafik was born in 1994 to Mr & Mrs Ruti Mulumba (father deceased), attended Kawempe Muslim and Rubaga High school.
He was in his final year at MUST pursuing a Bachelors of Science in planning and community development.
Most of his friends have described him as a creative, friendly, intelligent, hardworking dude. He contested for a GRC position in his first year and was an ardent member of MUMSA (Mbarara University Muslim Students Association).
We extend our deepest sympathies to Shafik’s family and may his Soul Rest in Eternal Peace.
