Since yesterday, there was a letter circulating in media calling for a ‘bloody Friday’ strike which wasn’nt officially from the Guild.
The Guild president of MUST while addressing the reasons that led to the strike clearly stated it out.
“I first of all want to distance myself and my cabinet from a letter that has been circulating on social media over reasons for a strike. We own the same cause in the letter but not the packaging of the content,” H.E Jastus Kizito said in a letter dated 11th March 2022.
He went on to address the public about what caused the students’ strike that happened today.
The reasons are as below;
- The changing results on students’ portal affecting the CGPA. This includes students meant to graduate in May, final year students now getting retakes in their first years and many other continuing students with changed grades.
- 15% retake policy. Students got to learn of their retakes while in another academic year meaning they had to stay back, re-do the papers yet they had paid their tuition for the next academic year.
- Students’ welfare. This includes;
- The non-functional and poor state of the washrooms/toilets.
- Lack of medicine in the University clinic.
- Water shortage in the University
- Lack of electricity sockets in lecture roomsNon-functional computer labs and WI-FI
- Lack of public address systems in lecture halls
- Students’ security
- Transportation means of Kihumuro students (Bus).
- Service provision monopoly in Kihumuro Campus. The students at this particular Campus have only one food service provider and lack other basic services like printing and photocopying services, mobile money, canteen etc.
- School Practice funds for the Faculty of Science students. Until now there are some students still stuck in the areas where they had gone for their school practice. It’s expected that these students have to get this money before going to their school practice destinations.
- Guild funds. In a letter from the University management dated 3rd March 2022 about the financial release that is expected in the last quota of the financial year in April, for a regime that is now coming to two months in office has not carried out any students’ activity due to lack of funds.
The Guild President called upon the media to normalize spreading authentic and well verified content from the rightful sources.
