According to Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) an average of 170,000 women are in reproductive age bracket. 75,000 of these suffer from Obstetric fistula.
In order to stop this number from increasing, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) through its department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has organized a fistula camp at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH). This has been done through the collaboration of MUST and Medland medical team from San Francisco in United States of America (USA).
The camp started on Monday 2nd March 2020 and is ending today (Friday 5th March 6, 2020) where over 50 patients have been worked on. Patients have been identified by sending calls to communities, transport and meals were also given to them and they are going to be treated for two weeks including surgery.
Dr. Musa Kayondo a gynecologist at MRRH, advised women to go for antenatal care following their set dates and also to continue keeping their children especially girls in school to avoid early pregnancies that can result into this condition . This will help them from being discriminated and most of the times leading into depression.
According to scientific research studies, obstetric fistula is a medical condition caused from obstructed labor when there is no one to provide medical care and attention which results into women have uterine rapture and post-partum that causes bleeding.
