The medical graduates from Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) have threatened no to join any government health facility until when their enhanced salaries have been enhanced.
This was communicated in a press statement released by pre-medical intern leaders Dr. Arineitwe Innocent and Nabidda Shamim.
“Following the presidential directive on august 9th 2021 to address challenges of medical interns among other healthcare providers, engagements have been. On 10th December 2021, the director general health services ministry of health responded in a letter ferociously intimidating and directing medical interns on strike to vacate hospitals premises,’’ the statement reads in part.
According to the Ministry of Health, the directive to inform medical interns to vacate hospital premises was aimed at creating room for the incoming interns who are to report in January 2022.
However, the pre -intern doctors from MUST have also joined their elders in demanding for the payment of their enhanced allowances.
“We clarify that the incoming medical interns from MUST shall not start internship until the grievances are addressed. We shall start when our predecessors finish their internship. We cannot antagonize the efforts to ameliorate the working environment for health workers to improve health service delivery in Uganda,’’ the statement added.
Earlier this week the Ministry of health argued that medical internship is a training. Medical interns are not public servants and therefore they’re free to take a decision not to train.
