In addition to Makerere University, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) will start enrolling student under the MasterCard Foundation scholarship that will cover full tuition, functional fees and upkeep for each student.
The plan was unveiled in a joint meeting held last week with the MasterCard directors to Uganda and MUST top administrators at the campus in Mbarara.
The scholarship will be granted to students for a long period of eight years after which the term of service will be renewed between the university and MasterCard Foundation. This will bring to two the number of Universities in Uganda where students can study for free under the MasterCard scholarship.
Currently, it’s at Makerere University where the MasterCard foundation is sponsoring over 1,000 students.
However, the scholarship will only be given to academically sound students who are economically disadvantaged after a year of evaluation and defending its capability.
The move was funded by MasterCard International in Uganda and coordinated by Forum for African Women Educationists Uganda (FAWEU) and the university.
“We are proud to be part of the Forum for African Women Educationists Uganda (FAWEU) lead implementation team. This is yet another opportunity to give a chance to anyone out there to go to school,” reads a post on MUST’s official Facebook page.
It is estimated that over 300 Ugandans are expected to benefit over the eight-year period of the scholarship with the major target being the girl child.
