Mbarara University of science and Technology (MUST) earlier on today held a strike that lasted for over six hours.
The University admininistration later on called out the Guild President for a negotiation meeting. The meeting was attended by the Resident City Commissioner, all Deputy Vice Chancellors, Regional Police Commander, Regional Internal Security Officer (RISO), University Secretary, University Engineer, Deputy RISO, University Bursar, Guild President, other security officials and other students’ leaders.
“I would like to bring to your attention the resolutions that came out of the negotiation meeting that was held today in Kihumuro Campus,” H.E Jastas Kizito said in a letter addressed to the students.
The resolutions are as below;
- The Immediate release of the students who are in police custody.
- Effective next Monday 14th March, Kihumuro Campus will be getting another food service provider. Other missing essential services like Printing, Mobile Money and the canteen to be put in place.
- Retake Policy for last academic year results has been advised to be discussed again in senate.
- The changing results: Whoever has been affected has been advised to visit the Academic Registrars’ office starting on Monday to rectify the results.
- The Bus: Shifts have been increased as the management pushes for a long term solution of procuring a new bus as directed by parliament in the last financial year where they proposed an allocation of Shs.500M for a new bus
- School practice funds: Students were promised that they will receive this money in the next quota which is a few weeks from now.
- Welfare;
- Sockets: As of now, the financial constraints can only work on the essential sockets to enhance learning to allow projection during lectures.
- Non-functional washrooms/toilets and electricity to be worked on with immediate effect.
- Water Shortage: In case of any water shortages, the Regional Police Commander pledged water supply from Uganda Police.
- University clinic: The University clinics to be equipped fully and the workforce to be available 24/7.
- Security: The university security will be reinforced in liaison with Uganda Police Force and security officials will be held accountable for any insecurity concern within the University premises.
- Guild activities: Due to a delay in release of funds from government, the management has only promised to improvise for urgent students’ activities like Fresher’s ball and in this case we are meant to present a new Fresher’s Ball budget to the University Secretary for consideration.
The Guild President concluded with cautioning the students to be calm within this period.
