In an evening filled with anticipation and radiant hope on 25th October, Samuel Peter Okoci, a final year student pursuing a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), emerged as the undisputed champion of Ayute Africa Challenge Season 2. This illustrious event, organized by Heifer International Uganda, unfolded amidst splendor at the prestigious Protea Hotel, Kololo.
The guest of honor at the occasion was the state minister for agriculture, animal industry, and fisheries, Hon. Kyakulag Fred Bwino. He graced the event with his presence, highlighting the government’s support and recognition of youth-led agri-tech innovation.
Heifer International Uganda, a champion for youth-led agri-tech innovations, was instrumental in making this event possible. Known for its commitment to sustainable development through agriculture, Heifer International Uganda played a pivotal role in supporting the Ayute Africa Challenge Season 2. This event celebrates youth-led agri-tech innovations and ingenuity in the agri-tech sector, where the youth’s entrepreneurial spirit shines.
Heifer International Uganda’s unwavering support for youth-led agri-tech innovations aligns with their broader mission of creating opportunities for sustainable growth and development in the agricultural sector.
The grand prize, a staggering 35 million Ugandan Shillings, was awarded to Okoci, the mastermind behind the winning agri-tech innovation. The Smart Brooder Technology, jointly developed by Okoci and his colleagues at the university, stood out as a shining example of youth-led agri-tech solutions designed to revolutionize poultry farming. The Smart Brooder Technology utilizes cutting-edge sensors and automation to create optimal conditions for chick rearing, ensuring healthier poultry and higher yields for farmers.
But the accolades didn’t end there. Katumwa Willy scooped the first runner-up prize with his AI-driven fish rearing system, which promises to enhance the fish farming industry with innovative technology, earning him 25 million Ugandan Shillings. Meanwhile, Ainembabazi Samantha, a fifth-year medical student at Uganda Christian University, claimed the second runner-up prize with her innovation, Freza. Freza is a fruit preservation system that utilizes nanotechnology to extend the shelf life of fruits, reducing food waste and increasing farmers’ income, earning her 10 million Ugandan Shillings.
In total, the three innovators partook a share of 70 million Shillings, set aside by Heifer International Uganda for Ayute Africa Challenge Season 2.
Samuel Peter Okoci’s victory is not only a personal triumph but also an inspiration for aspiring engineers and innovators in the agri-tech domain. His journey from a dedicated student at Mbarara University of Science and Technology to a champion is a story of determination, hard work, and unwavering belief in one’s abilities.
