Yesterday 18th March 2020, the President of Uganda H.E Y.K Museveni addressed the nation on the deadly epidemic of COVID-19 (Coronavirus). In his speech, he ordered closure of schools, pre-schools, Universities and higher institutions for a period of 30 days so as to decrease the chances of spreading the virus through such gatherings.
The closure came about when universities such as Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) had already entered into examinations period. MUST students started writing mid semester papers on Monday of this week and they were expected to finish in the coming week.
According to Ryan Umar Muhumuza, the MUST Guild President, 95% of the mid semester papers will be done by Friday 20th march 2020 which is the closing date for all academic institutions, while the remaining 5% shall be done when students come back in April.
“The president of Uganda in his nation address gave directive that institutions should close by this Friday, a formal communication from the University Secretary will be released soon on the matter as well as the preparations for your departure. Examinations that not shall be done by Friday will be done when you are back after the 32 days. Continue to take the necessary precautions as your safety is paramount to the institution of MUST’’ Umar said in his message to students.
MUST Vice Chancellor Prof Celestino Obua urged MUST community to say no to coronavirus by adhering the set preventive measures. He also informed them about the standby medical team that is already set at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.
