As Makerere University prepares to kick off this year’s guild campaigns, the university Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe has warned continuing students to abstain from the vice of hooliganism most especially in this year’s guild election period.
In a statement shared on his social media platforms, Nawangwe has vowed not to allow 50-100 indisciplined students to tarnish the image of more than 36,000 students.
“Every act of hooliganism tarnishes the image of Makerere and the Makerere graduates. Let us resolve to stamp hooliganism out of our University once and forever. We should not allow 50-100 indisciplined students tarnish the image of more than 36,000 students.” The statement reads in part.
Nawangwe, who is currently on official duty in UK, London called upon the Makerere community to rebrand the university’s image as he indicated that hooliganism is likely to dominate this year’s guild elections and campaigns.
“While the small group will want to use you for their selfish gains including money and political lime light, their actions will only hurt your image and opportunities for employment. As we approach Guild campaigns this is likely to be heightened. So let us continue with the work of rebranding our great university by doing only the things that build it and not those that destroy it.” The statement reads further.
This year’s Makerere guild campaigns are expected to kick off in March amid concerns from the current leaders that there is need for election reforms.
