Siperia Mollie Saasiraabo a Guild Representative Councilor (GRC) for the School of Psychology at Makerere University has been denied a chance to participate in the forthcoming elections of Uganda National Student’s Association (UNSA) as one of the delegates from Makerere University.
According to the UNSA constitution, every university sends delegates to the Uganda National Students Association while there, they can contest on any post they intend to serve the Ugandan students on.
Before the demonstration against the 15% increamement policy that happened in mid October, Mollie was elected by her fellow Guild leaders to be one of the University representatives to participate in the UNSA elections.
It is remembered that Mollie was one of the students who led that demonstration against tuition increment which prompted the university management to suspend her together with other 8 Students. On top of that, the University administration also withdrew Mollie’s slot in UNSA.
“Due to my involvement in the struggle for affordable education for the Ugandan student, I was suspended from the university. In a high-handed move, the administration withdrew my slot in UNSA.” Mollie said on one of her social platforms.
According to her, On 24th October 2019, the dean of students drafted a letter informing the General Secretary of Uganda National Students Association that management had withdrawn Mollie’s recommendation as the Makerere University delegate to the 31st UNSA National students’ Council.
“I was not appointed by Prof. Nawangwe or any of his associates to represent the university. I was elected by the students of Makerere through their Representatives in the Students Guild. It is sad therefore that a power excited official should take over the power of students to decide who leads them.” Mollie concluded.
