The regulator of higher education in Uganda, National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has paused the operations of Great Lakes Regional University (GLRU), in Kanungu for 30 days.
NCHE cities that there have been battles of institute ownership and misunderstands within the university management which prompted the council to take an action.
NCHE executive director Prof Mary Okwakwol revealed that the decision to close GLRU was taken during a meeting held on November 22, where the council discussed noncompliance issues at the institution.
“Please be informed that the decision to halt the operations of the university is to enable NCHE conduct a thorough investigation into the issues discussed in the meeting. Furthermore, please note by copy of this letter that NCHE is requesting the Resident District Commissioner of Kanungu to provide security for the university property,’’ Prof Okwakwol communicated.
She further directed that the university’s management, staff and students vacate the university premises by 12 noon on Wednesday, November 24.
However, the university director, Honest Wilkins Natukwasa says the decision by NCHE to halt the institution’s operations is not fair.
“The process to reach that conclusion because key stakeholders were not consulted and the decision was done at haste. Ownership issues should not have affected the continuity of the University operations,’’
On behalf of the University Vice chancellor, Ms. Dorothy Kabugo communicated that the students who had paid fees for this semester, will have it forwarded to the next period of study when the university officially re-opens.
