The National Council of Higher Education (NCHE) has denied allegations of its probe into the degrees of Kampala International University.
On 26th of September, 2018, a one page publication in the Monitor newspaper sent chills down the spines of Kampala International University (KIU) students and graduates alike as it was alleged that the National Council of Higher Education (NCHE) had opened a probe into unaccredited courses being taught at the Campus.
However, the Ag. Executive Director of National Council for Higher Education authored a letter to the Vice Chancellor of KIU, Dr. Mouhamad Mpezamihigo on 27th of September to deny this.
“The council did not in any way state that the degrees of Kampala International University were being probed by The Government of Uganda or by the NCHE itself,” Dr. Alex Kagume emphasized in his letter.
Likewise, Prof. George Nasinyama, the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academics dismissed the claims of the probe. He explained that the University had submitted the programmes to the NCHE for review and would therefore be checking on them for progress.
By May this year, NCHE had not recognized 13 courses at KIU. It should be remembered that two months ago, several students from the School of Engineering at the University demonstrated in demand for an explanation as to why they were admitted to unaccredited programmes in contravention of the Universities and other Tertiary Institutions Act (2003) that bars Universities from offering courses that are unverified. Most of the programmes that remain unaccredited at the institution are from the engineering department.
As students continue to decry rejections at places of work, it is left to NCHE to accredit these courses and make them valuable on the job market. Campus Bee will continue to avail you with updates on any new developments on this story.
