After the successful build up and production of a robot last year, Ndejje University has now embarked on constructing East Africa’s largest renewable energy plant and production of environmentally friendly forms of energy, the first of its kind in the Uganda.
The Luwero-based campus is focusing on research and production of waste-free products and erection of a recycling plant with a capacity of over 1000 tonnes of waste per day.
Currently, the university has set up a bio waste and biogas plant in Wobulenzi estimated to have to costed millions of money. This plant is to recycle and produce Bio Gas which is a clean source of fuel with no negative effect to the environment.
The engineering students under the renewable energy laboratory are also generating energy from Briquettes that are used for cooking. These briquettes are said to be capable of saving fuel of up to 90 per cent. The Briquettes also do not produce smoke or soot when cooking unlike ordinary charcoal.
The University now plans to produce electricity from small hydro power plant as well as vast technology in irrigation and insulation to guard against green house effects in nature, all courtesy of the renewable energy lab.
These innovations made the university hold the first ever international conference in bio-waste recycling in Africa that took place last month at Hotel Africana in Kampala, something that no other university in Uganda has ever ventured into.
The other innovations the university is pursuing currently are production of energy savers, robots, and several computer softwares, among others things.
The Director of research in the Renewable energy lab, Dr Thomas Lube attributes the improved research to critical thinking by students and their ability to find solutions to environmental problems that is currently affecting Uganda.
“We have several projects we are working on, both in research and innovation. Our aim is to produce clean energy that has less effect to the environment,” Dr Lube said.
The briquettes produced by Ndejje University are available at the Renewable Energy laboratory at main campus where one can access them as well as from exhibition stalls where the University is participating or by contacting them via emailenergy@ndejjeuniversity.ac.ug
