The alarming number of students who failed to sit for their exams last semester or probably dropped out has compelled the Ndejje University administration to organize yet another set of examinations for last semester.
This is a rare move that is aimed at helping the victims to avoid missing papers and fines.
Last semester, the students staged a strike that made many miss papers as well fail to complete tuition on time.
Hundreds of Ndejje University students chopped exams and did not surface to sit the end of semester Two examinations, forcing the university to provide a second chance to them to sit the Semester I examinations this year.
It is emerging that the big number of students missing exams is alarming to the university management; forcing them to consider setting up emergency papers to cater for such students.
Due to the high tuition fees to a tune of over Shs 3,000,000 per semester and University policy that students who clear tuition late pay an extra fine for late clearance, many students always miss end of Semester exams with a large number dropping out every semester since they cannot afford the high tuition. Others however missed the exams because they were not well prepared.
Many students did not report back for this semester as well failed to write last semester’s exams after a whooping number of was suspended on allegations of staging a strike that left university property worth millions destroyed.
The university policy bars anyone who fails to clear fees to nil balance from sitting examinations.
The move by the University to reconsider setting another paper for those who missed last semester is a welcomed idea to many. Though worry is that the exams will be done at a higher fee than the missed paper fee of Shs 150,000. The exams will be done two weeks before the beginning of next semester 2017.
