Ndejje University team that has always played in the highly billed Nile Special University Football League (UFL) has been banned from participating in the tournament after a ruling from a scuffle that erupted between fans when Ndejje was playing Makerere University last semester at Ndejje University main campus in Luwero.
In the scuffle, Ndejje students fought with Makerere University team as they hurled stones, blows and insults at each other until armed soldiers from Bombo barracks and police intercepted the fight. Though eyewitnesses at the scene say the fight was caused by Makerere students who majorly came from Lumumba hall, Ndejje University team was the one that got banned from participating in the rest of the league matches.
According to one eyewitness, Joan Akumu a student at Ndejje, no sooner had the Ndejje team scored their first goal than the Makerere boys who were mostly intoxicated started beating one Ndejje fan till the other fans joined in the fight. One Makerere fan was badly injured and was left half dead by the time police arrived at the scene and fired bullets in the air to disperse the students.
Although it is said that Makerere students were the initiators of the scuffle, the University Football League organizing committee sat down and punished only Ndejje University by banning their team from the rest of the league matches.
The league committee further went ahead and canceled all the points Ndejje had garnered from their previous league games, a move described as biased and very unfair by the Ndejje University administration and sports department.
According to the dean of students, Wilfred Kato Muhumuuza who also doubles as the senior sports tutor at Ndejje University, the University team decided to pull out of this year’s season of the league after the unfair ruling of the organizing body that banned their team.
“How can you ban a team and even go ahead and clear all the points it had accumulated in previous matches with another team? That is not so fair, that is why we decided to pull our team out in this year’s season, maybe we shall go back to the league some other time. For now, our focus is on the big league and other upcoming international games,” he told our reporter.
The University Football league is currently on with many Universities participating, Campusbee will keep giving you live updates of the fixtures and matches.
