Ndejje University has been ranked the best private University in Uganda and second best university in Uganda after Makerere, according to the new rankings.
Makerere University, Ndejje University were ranked 18th and 42nd respectively as the best performing and reputable universities among the 200 best universities in Africa, as per the new 4iCU.org university web rankings.
This is contrary to the Times Higher rankings earlier this year where Makerere University appeared as third hence making it drop by 14 positions. In the new rankings, Makerere comes after Cape Peninsula University of Technology from South Africa.
The rankings position Mbarara University of Science and Technology 73rd while Uganda Christian University was ranked in the 91st position. This means that Ndejje becomes the second best and highly ranked private university in the country.
South African Universities took the lead occupying the first 10 positions.
They include; University of Cape Town in the 1st position, University of South Africa 2nd, Univeristy of Pretoria 3rd, Universities Stellenbosch 4th, University of the Witwatersrand 5th, North-West University 6th, University of KwaZulu-Natal 7th, Rhodes University 8th, University of Johannesburg 9th and University of the Western Cape ranked in the 10th position.
Earlier this year, the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR) ranked Makerere University at the 846th position from 869th position in 2015, out of the 1,000 universities in the global rankings.
According to the CWUR, Makerere ranks seventh on African continent and remains the best outside South Africa and Egypt.
In 2015, Thompson Reuter Corporation ranked Makerere in the ninth position, South Africa taking the first six universities.
This is a clear indication that Makerere University has deteriorated but yet Uganda is hopeful as private universities are also taking their way to the front as far as the academic world is concerned.
