The Ugandan education community and country at large are celebrating a win, after a Ndejje University student, Yeko Dismus scooped a gold medal in the ongoing FISU World University Games in Chengdu, China.
Dismus completed a 10,000m (men’s race) in a record 28 minutes and 59.2 seconds at the event that was held at Shuangliu stadium.
His gold medal marks the first from an African athlete in this year’s games in China.
The student beat other steep contenders to the finish line, in the race including Sam Cheptegei & Seith Akampa (team Uganda), Kelvin Chepsigor (Kenya), Chen Tianyu (China).
The 19-year-old says he draws inspiration from prominent Ugandan sports personality, Joshua Cheptegei who is a two-time 10,000 m World champion from 2019 and 2022.
Upon his victory, Dismus told a native publication that: “I saw that I had an advantage, especially on how I had positioned myself. I am so happy that I came out as the winner”
“Joshua Cheptegei inspires me especially how he has been able to break records in the 10,000m and 5,000m race. One thing I admire about him is how he starts and finishes his races” he also said.
The victorious student pursues Bachelor of Forest Science & Environmental Management (BFEM) at Ndejje University.
