Makerere University has today received a newly renovated Mary Stuart Hall from the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), marking a significant upgrade to one of the university’s most iconic female halls of residence.
The handover ceremony, held this afternoon, was led by NEC Managing Director, Lt. Gen. James Mugira, and attended by members of the university administration. The renovation was made possible through government funding allocated to improve student accommodation infrastructure.
Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, expressed his gratitude for the successful completion of the works. “I thank NEC for a job very well done and the Government for allocating the resources that made this possible,” he stated in a post on social media.
The facelift is expected to significantly improve the living standards and comfort of students housed at Mary Stuart Hall, commonly known as “Box,” which has long served as a cornerstone of student life and sisterhood at the university.
NEC, the commercial arm of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), has been increasingly involved in civil works projects, including renovations at major educational institutions, road construction, and public infrastructure.
Mary Stuart Hall is one of Makerere’s oldest residence halls, and its renovation aligns with the university’s broader plans to modernize its infrastructure while preserving its historical heritage.
