The acting Vice Chancellor of Kyambogo University Prof Eli Katunguka has asked President Museveni to urgently fulfill his pledge of increasing university professors’ salaries to Shs15m a month.
Prof Katunguka made the call during a press conference ahead of Kyambogo’s 13th graduation ceremony where 7000 students are set to graduate.
University professors had all along been receiving about shs4m until they protested and government proposed salary increment in phases.
“Other lecturers at the universities would have their pay scaled up according to their seniority,” said the then Minister of Education and Sports Jesca Alupo.
She further said government was developing a comprehensive salary structure for public universities under the hospices of the presidential advisory committee chaired by the prime minister.
The proposed increments were aimed at motivating lecturers at various levels so that they concentrate on their work and research.
Prof Katunguka’s call comes in the wake of fresh allegations that lecturers from the closed Makerere University are seeking jobs abroad and within other non-governmental organisations.
Currently, the highest paid lecturers earn Shs 8m a month.
