To dispel the allegations that were recently made against him by the UNSA Minister of Information and Communication Denis Obita, Matanda Abubaker has issued to us a statement categorically disputing the claims that he misappropriated Ush60M that had been given to the Uganda National Students’ Association by President Museveni. It is alleged that Matanda in cohorts with three other UNSA members colluded to defraud President Museveni of money at the recently concluded UNSA Council Meeting in Soroti District. His full statement is reproduced below:
- It’s not true that money was handed to me. I’m a political head, money was handed to the technical head who is the Executive secretary, Mr. Mohammed Sserwadda.
- It is false to insinuate that the money was shared amongst us as non of us touched a single coin of it. Immediately he got it, the ES handed the money to the Senior Presidential secretary in charge of welfare, who told us she had been charged with ensuring accountability and from that time, with the help of the Senior accountant Office of the prime minister, they dealt directly with service providers until the last day when 700,000/= was reported to us as the remainder for the secretariat.
- It is wrong to say I asked for jobs for myself and my cronies, only asked the President to always place the products of UNSA because they are always unique. I thus handed over c.vs of NEC members, and past UNSA leaders who have never got jobs. This was without mine and the said Mr. Ekima because we are still in school. Council was for three days not two, 26th being arrival and 29th for departure. Five hundred delegates were expected, three
hundred forty-four turned not as claimed that 1000 were expected and only 200 showed up.
