The newly elected Chairperson of Electoral Commission (EC) for 2022 at the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), Mutasa Godfrey says he is set to constitute and lead an independent electoral body.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Campus Bee after winning the elections, Mutasa said the EC must be independent to serve the students competently.
“It is time for the students to determine their own leaders not those imposed by the administration under my leadership as the EC Chairperson. We will do this by reclaiming the independence of the Electoral Commission for the students to enjoy their democratic rights,” Mutasa pledged.
Mutasa told Campus Bee that his leadership will respect the Islamic University Students’ Union Constitution that guides how electoral processes must be conducted at the university.
“The IUSU constitution must be respected. The constitution stresses that the students have a right to vote for their leaders being a constitutional right to everyone. Students must determine their own leaders,” he added.
Mutasa says he is set to unify all nationalities and tribes at the university through making sure that he is providing a uniform voting platform to all guild and parliamentary aspirants.
Last year, guild leaders at the Islamic University in Uganda Main Campus were sworn in unopposed and without elections that did not please some students.
It was the first time in history of the university to declare guild leaders without elections. This was as a result of a vetting process conducted by university administrator’s that branded other guild aspirants incompetent for the posts leaving one candidate on each elective post.
Yesterday, Saturday, 23rd April, 2022, the students of IUIU Main Campus in Mbale city elected Mutasa Goefrey as the Chairperson of Islamic University Students’ Union Electoral Commission 2022.
Mutasa, a fourth year student pursuing a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) defeated three others to win the position. He managed to scoop 584 votes. The students have entrusted him to manage guild elections and parliamentary elections slated for 14th and 15th May, 2022 respectively.
