Makerere University is in final plans of constructing a new first class teaching hospital, the first of it’s kind in Uganda and East Africa.
The construction will commence next year on the university land in Katalemwa Gayaza, Wakiso District.
It is estimated to sit on 30 acres of land with a budget of US $400 million (UGX 1,474,800,000,000).
Once it is completed it will have a capacity of 200 beds at once.
“We have a budget of US$400 million where the plan is to have a 200 bed capacity facility that will sit on 30 acres of land at Katalemwa and we are finalizing talks with the government on the financing of the project.” Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, the Makerere University vice chancellor said.
Basing on the plan, the facility will have both out-patient and in-patient departments, theaters where major operations will be conducted.
In addition to those, there will also be space for recreational activities, staff quarters and a nursery school.
“This facility is set to solve the big number of interns from Makerere at Mulago National Referral Hospital yet the hospital can’t admit all of them given the increasing number of students offering medical courses from other universities who also practice internship at Mulago. This facility will de-congest Mulago.” Prof Nawangwe added.
