Last week, Reach A Hand Uganda (RAHU) held their 4th annual Camp dubbed ‘Get Up Speak Out’ (GUSO) at Hana International School in Nsangi where over 600 Youth from Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo and Somalia.
The Camp is not only meant to mentor youths about their sexuality and sexual reproductive Health but also to inspire them and guide them as they make their life decisions.
This year, RAHU invited many people to speak to young people and these included the Nigerian songbird, Chidinma, famous for her song ‘Kedike’ and one of MTV Shuga’s lead actor Emmanuel Ikubese who had come for the launch of MTV Shuga’s Season Five.
In her speech, Chidinma was resounding the need to empower and protect the girl child to achieve her dreams. “Do not allow anyone make you think that you are less. Always have self-confidence,” she said, “You can be anything you want to be in this world. Let nobody tell you otherwise,” Chidinma added.
After her talk, she treated the youth to her top chart songs like the popular “kedike” and Fallen in Love joined by RAHU’s dance theatre winners from Bishop Cipriano Kihangire.
Ikubese also inspired youth with a few words, “I came to inspire you young people but seeing you on stage trying to communicate issues affecting you like teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, child marriage and impacts of cross-generational relationships, I am leaving Uganda inspired instead,” he said.
Some of the activities at the camp included focus group discussions on key topics like like skills development, menstrual hygiene, HIV/AIDS, teenage pregnancy, child marriage, financial literacy, body changes, hygiene and sanitation.
Youth engaged in many other activities that left the community or them inspired, and grateful. Till next year!
