In a tightly competitive show yesterday, the Nkobazambogo and Northern Uganda students’ Associations emerged winners of the cultural gala after they each scooped the same points topping the list of the other cultural associations at the Ndejje University cultural gala.
The Baganda under the Association of Ndejje University Nkobazambogo students association( NUNSTA) have been the defending champions for a long time since the gala’s inception in 2013. Last year, the Nkobazambogo won the gala with a large margin of 19 points, beating the first runner-up, the Acholi’s under their umbrella of Ndejje University-Northern Uganda Students Association( NUNUSA).
This time round, 14 cultural groups from different regions of the country participated in the event with the Bugwere students Association participating for the first time. Of the 14 associations that showcased their cultural norms, Nothern Uganda students and Nkobazabogo each scooped overall 265 points hence making the two winners of this 5th Cultural gala as below.

While announcing the results, the judge Dr. Adrew Kambumba who also doubles as a senior lecturer at the college of performing arts, Makerere University said the points were tallied from folklore songs, traditional poetry, tradition music, dance and drama as well as use of instruments on the stage.
According to the dean of Students, Wilfred Kato Muhumuuza, Cultural gala is a time to appreciate and recognize our cultures and different diverse backgrounds.
“Cultural gala creates awareness of our different backgrounds and helps us understand the different cultures of our neighbors, in a way making us more hospitable to others from different origins,” he said.
The chief guest for the event was the secretary UNESCO who was represented by Dr.Lali Mundrugo who also doubles as the program officer at Uganda National Commission for UNESCO.
The winners of the 5th cultural gala have been awarded a bull each which they will soon slaughter to celebrate their victory.
