Students of Nkumba University main branch in Entebbe Tuesday afternoon rejected food served by the University after it failed to provide chicken.
The angry students dragged the University Secretary, Dr Francis Kasekende to explain why chicken was missing yet it’s indicated on the menu.
According to the University student menu, students are supposed to be served chicken on Tuesday’s every week.
However, the food distributors, Finland Restaurant, who previously supplied food for Makerere University Business School, MUBS, has not provided chicken for the past three weeks without clear explanation.
This forced the students to seek an explanation from University administration.
The University Secretary failed to convince the students to eat whatever was prepared. The students protested and declined to be served with the ‘usual’ posho and beans.
In the demonstration led by a Guild aspirant, Mr Kawuma Mahad, the students, among other things complained of poor quality of food, stoppage of milk, and small amount of food provided.
The students forced the University Secretary to taste the poor quality food that they endure every day. He obliged and said that indeed, he is going to make sure the quality of the food improves.
The University Secretary then signed a Memorandum of Understanding with students to provide the chicken they missed for three weeks and the menu be followed strictly.
“The University Secretary promises that starting 14th March, 2018 the following will be put right;
1. The menu Will be followed
2. The three times chicken has been missed will be served for three consecutive days with effect from Wednesday 14th March, 2018. After that the menu will be followed,” the MoU read.
The manager of Finland Restaurant, the supplier, faulted the University Management for not paying money in time.
Students who wish to be accommodated by and eat the food provided by the University have to pay 950,000 each semester for the services.
