There was a big scuffle yesterday involving Nkumba University students, university administration and security over the proposed impeachment of Byron Luswata, the university’s Guild President. The university parliament last Friday presented a petition to the university administration and council suggesting to impeach Luswata over alleged incompetence, arrogance, corruption, greed, ego-centrism, among other complaints.
The students were led by Wilberforce Otim, who went further to accuse their guild of embezzling UGX 20 million meant for the guild council, UGX 3.8 million meant for Health Service Delivery as well as failing to settle students’ grievances.
A scuffle was sparked off yesterday when the disappointed students attempted to hold a student’s parliament aimed at impeaching Luswata. They were however blocked by security officers and the university management on grounds that the Guild President wasn’t given a fair hearing.
According to the Nkumba University Vice Chancellor, Wilson Muyinda, several university council members need to guide management before the impeachment process is given a green light.
Our eyes and ears at Nkumba University have further revealed that armed police officers led by the Entebbe Division Police Commander, Baker Kawonawo and officers from other security agencies deployed heavily at the university yesterday following a students leaders’ meeting held at Lake Side beach in Kitinda in Katabi town council on Sunday. The meeting was basically held to strategize on how to impeach the guild president.
Muyinda added that they are going to write to the guild president to return all university properties under his care until the situation returns to normal.
