Nkumba University has officially launched construction of its third campus in Kyaka Municipality, Kyegegwa District, marking the district’s first university establishment.
During the groundbreaking ceremony held on 14th November 2024, area Member of Parliament Hon. Bright Tom Amooti, himself a 2017 Nkumba alumnus, welcomed the development and pledged to help market the institution, citing the region’s numerous secondary schools as a potential source of students.
“Today is a very important day because Nkumba is here. This is historical,” said Hon. Amooti during the ceremony attended by university officials, local leaders, and community members.
Board of Trustees Chairman Mr. Kisitu Willy Fullu traced the institution’s growth from its humble beginnings as a kindergarten in 1952 to its current expansion. “Kyegegwa now becomes our third campus after Entebbe and Kampala, and we intend to grow beyond borders,” he stated.
Speaking on behalf of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Francis Kasekende, university officials acknowledged Mr. Balinda Solomon’s role in facilitating the land acquisition. The project, conceived in 2014, received council approval and funding this year.
Local residents welcomed the development, with some like Abwooki Moureen noting its potential impact: “Besides having a university where our children will advance to post-secondary education, we are optimistic that this will bring job opportunities and boost business.”
Construction of the new campus is scheduled to begin later this month.
