Students at Nkumba University were on Thursday enriched with knowledge on career advancement as NSSF continues its series of career expo across universities in the country.

NSSF career expo, which intends to expose students to information on making vital career decisions after university, was hosted at Nkumba University.

The event which was attended by majorly students and a few staff members had a line-up of prominent motivational speakers and celebrated civil servants.

Jonathan Ebuk, an officer employment services at KCCA, kicked off the speeches, tipping students on excelling in start-up businesses.

He quoted famous American motivational speaker, Zig Zaglar, about the value of positivity of mind in entrepreneurship.

“A positive attitude will have positive results because attitudes are contagious.”

Anthony Kivumbi, from PostBank Uganda LTD, walked students through preparation of interviews, emphasizing mainly about the pertinence of researching before heading for the interview.

“Do not embarrass yourself in an interview when asked about the organisation you applied to. Employers will assume you have no interest in their company but looking for survival,” he revealed.

NSSF Contributions Manager, Geoffrey Waisa Sajjabi, told students to always treasure the first job opportunity since it’s from them that they can showcase their skills.

“Your first job is the first step of the rest of your professional life regardless of whether it’s in line with what you studied or not,” he said.

He further urged students to be good with people skills considering they are important when finding a job as well as retaining it.

“When you get a job, you need to relate well with people even at a lower level because they can determine your promotion or getting fired. Do not undermine people you find at work.”

The last speaker was famous author and motivational speaker, Samuel A. Bakutana, who took to stage to inform students how there is a whole big difference between school life and real life.

“School gives you a photographic imagination but life gives you transformation. Life rewards those who are daring like Steve Jobs. School punishes you for breaking regulations but life pays those who learn through mistakes.”

The expo, which has so far been taken to Makerere University Business School and Makerere University, is expected to move to other universities.
